PALMYRA FOOD PANTRY RECEIVES DONATION
The Palmyra Area Chamber of Commerce donated $200 to the Palmyra Food Pantry, located in the lower level of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, on October 25, 2011. This donation of funds came from some of the Chambers proceeds they received at their first car show event that took place last August in the village park.
“The Food Pantry is grateful for this donation from the Chamber of Commerce,” said Marlene Frehner, a member of the Palmyra Food Pantry.“Our expenses have far outweighed our income in the last few months so this donation, along with others, is greatly appreciated and needed,” she added.Donations that are received during November and December will be used to help distribute Thanksgiving and possibly Christmas food baskets, if enough funds are donated. At this time the food pantry is being forced to cut their monthly food menus and are considering other curbs on the pantry usage.“Since the State of Wisconsin has cut funding and the Federal government has not settled a budget, donations like these are critical for the future of the pantry,” said Frehner.
A SUCCESSFUL CLASSIC CAR AND BIKE SHOW
The Palmyra Chamber of Commerce sponsored their first “Classic Car & Bike Show” on Saturday, August 20, 2011, in the Palmyra Village Park.
The early morning rain and thunderstorms, with the prediction of more thunderstorms reoccurring in the afternoon, didn’t deter anyone from attending the Palmyra Chamber’s first ever-classic car and bike show. Car and bike owners from as far away as Janesville, Spring Grove IL and Watertown turned up at the park bright and early to display their unique vehicles. There were over fifty vehicles that formed lines in several different directions for onlookers to view. Every make and model from a 1927 model T Ford to a 2010 Chevy Camaro came in hopes of winning a prize. Members of the Chamber awarded plaques to the 1st and 2nd place winners in each class plus a “People’s Choice Award” that was accompanied with a $100.00 from the Palmyra State Bank in honor of their 100 year anniversary.
The thirteen 1st place winners were: Deloris Keppen from Jefferson with her 1927 Model T Ford, Bob Keppen with his 1956 Mercury Montclair, Lloyd Nelson of Milton with a 1960 Chevy Corvette, Dave and Nora Michaelis from Waukesha with their 1965 Chevy El Camino, Jerry Garlock of Palmyra with a 1970 Ford Mustang, Mike Patrick from Whitewater with his 1971 Plymouth Cuda, Mark Garlock of Palmyra with a 2010 Chevy Camaro, Paul Richey from Hebron with a 2005 Ford Mustang, Mike Kramer of Palmyra with his 1948 Studebaker M15A, Mike Caulfield from Delavan with a 1983 Jeep CJ-7, and Jerry Thompson from Janesville with his 2009 home-built Buell Bobber motorcycle. The People’s Choice Award went to Tim Scheftner of New Berlin for his 1932 Ford Coupe 5 Window.
Participants and guests enjoyed a day filled with fun, food, prepared and served by members of the Park & Recreation Department under the management of Bill Lean, and music. The live band, “Tune Smith” filled the air with music from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that included a wide variety of pop and rock tunes.

DANCING IN THE STREET
The Palmyra Chamber Street Dance provided a beat to the July 4th festivities on Friday evening, July 1, 2011, with the largest crowd in attendance since this annual event began.
It was practically wall-to-wall residents and guests from the center of North Third Street all the way to Taft Street. However, the younger crowd, ages four through sixteen, claimed a good share of the pavement in front of the Masonic Temple for dancing and just having fun.
Palmyra Chamber members started up the grills early and continued to serve up hamburgers, cheeseburgers, brats, corn and hotdogs along with all the condiments for a continuous line of hungry customers. The Palmyra American Legion, Post 304, served up nachos and soda, while the Palmyra Untied Methodist Church parishioners served up a variety of ice cream Sundaes, with or without a delicious chocolate brownie, topped with chocolate syrup. The Palmyra Lioness provided freshly popped popcorn, pretzels and root beer floats. There was definitely something to please everyone’s pallet.
Starting at 7 p.m. Echo Road, sponsored by the Palmyra State Bank in honor of their hundredth year anniversary, played a variety of 70s music throughout the evening
All those who turned out enjoyed a perfect fun-filled evening of good food, a time to relax and visit with friends and neighbors and listen to some good up-beat music.

PALMYRA STATE BANK CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY
Palmyra State Bank will mark an important milestone in its history on October 21, 2011 as it celebrates 100 years of service to the people of Palmyra and the surrounding area. A special community celebration event is being planned for Friday, October 21st.
The Bank of Palmyra was founded in 1893 and The Farmers Savings Bank was chartered in 1911.In 1931, following the Great Depression, the only two banks in Palmyra, Wisconsin, The Bank of Palmyra and The Farmers Savings Bank merged to become The Palmyra State Bank.
During the early years, The Bank of Palmyra occupied a portion of the Tisch House, which housed a fine restaurant and tavern as well as the largest hotel in Palmyra. That former bank office now houses New House of Design Floral & Gift.
When The Bank of Palmyra and The Farmers Savings Bank merged in 1931 to form The Palmyra State Bank, it continued operation in the former Farmers Savings Bank office at 225 West Main Street, which is now home to the Just Ask Rental store.
As the bank continued to grow and prosper, more space was needed. In 1998 Palmyra State Bank moved to a new building and its current location at 111 East Main Street in the heart of downtown Palmyra.
To help commemorate the occasion the bank has a display of historical artifacts in the lobby which will be on exhibit through the anniversary celebration. If you have an artifact that you would like to loan the bank, please contact Mike Mikkelsen or Lee Cushman at the bank. All items on loan will be displayed securely and returned to the owner following the anniversary event.
The officers, directors and staff of Palmyra State Bank would like to thank Terry Tutton, Dave Turner and Leo Manogue from the Carlin House & Turner Museum in Palmyra for their assistance in creating the historical display and relocating it to the bank.
