The Palmyra Municipal Airport

The Palmyra Municipal Airport is located on the edge of the village limits, at the intersection of North First Street and Hwy. 106, and is owned by the Town of Palmyra.  The airport covers approximately seventy-nine acres and has one of the finest grass runways in the Midwest. A newly constructed blacktop taxiway runs parallel to the south side of the 2,800-foot landing strip and also separates each row of hangers.  At the present time there are fifty completed hangers and sixty-nine airplanes that lease space at the airport.

The first, very basic hanger was built in 1949 and the most modern hanger was completed in 2006.  The aircraft that occupy these hangers range from an ultralite to a four- place single engine.  This includes some experimental models still in the process of being built.

The airport is open year-round and is used regularly by aircraft from the area.  On any given weekend during the summer you can view an average of twenty to thirty airplanes landing or taking off from the airport landing strip.

The Pamyra Flying club

The Palmyra Flying Club held it’s first meeting on October 18, 1945 with twenty-one members present.  Today their membership has grown to a little over a hundred.

Their meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7p.m. in the Club House located on the airport.

The Flying Clubs largest fundraiser is the Fly-In, Drive-In, Walk-In, Breakfast held on Father’s Day.  They serve an average of 1,500 to 2,000 people. It’s a wonderful time to see all different kinds of private planes and have a chance to take a ride in a plane or helicopter and view Palmyra from the air.

 The Flying Hawks

The Palmyra Airport is also the home of the Flying Hawks.  Over the years they have been involved in training countless numbers of new pilots.  Today the club owns three airplanes, which are kept at the airport and are available for rental by the 60 members of the Flying Hawks.

 The EAA Chapter 1177

The EAA Chapter 1177’s main focus is aviation awareness and education, both youth and adult.  The Chapter is in the eleventh year and has given more than 800 free airplane rides to area students. They provide free airplane rides to kids ages 8-17 on the first Sunday of May from 10AM to 2PM.  Their meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month and have guest speakers or outings related to aviation.  They also host the Aero Scholars Program at the High School where high-school students learn about careers in aviation and piloting skills, while earning up to six college credits if they complete both courses.

The last two years the EAA Chapter has hosted a Poker Run Breakfast open to the public in October. This year it will be on Sunday October 12th from 7AM until noon and will be drawing for a 2008 Arctic Cat ATV raffle.  The proceeds from this raffle will be used to support scholarship activities and the building of a facility at the Palmyra Airport to provide aviation educational opportunities for area youth and adults.
